Audi is planning to enter an autonomous rally version of its popular TT road car at next year’s Pikes Peak hill climb. The car is being developed by Volkswagen’s Electronics Research lab, Stamford University and Sun Microsystems according to Autocar.
The goal is to create a realistic driving experience from a machine that would react the way a human would to changing conditions on a circuit.
Driverless rally cars aren’t a new idea, but this will be first time that an autonomous car has contested an event designed for human competitors.

It’s hard to see how something that has to drive so slowly would be able to impress at Pikes Peak. But, this was a few years ago, and technology has vastly improved since then.

I believe this is the team and car that actually won the DARPA competition a couple of years ago. It will be interesting to see how it handles the conditions of Pikes Peak course compared to the DARPA course. If I remember the speeds were a bit faster on the more open parts of the DARPA Challenge course as opposed to the stuff shown in the video.
I remember seeing something about it on the Discovery channel a few years ago. I agree, back then it was pretty slow and cumbersome. It would be great if it was competitive.
