September wasn’t a good month for auto sales across the board. Bloomberg reports that GM, Toyota and Ford all saw double digit declines in sales last month. The government rebate program ‘Cash for Clunkers‘ ended in August, and many analysts were predicting a decline at the end of CARS. The program did a lot of good while it lasted, and I’d like to see it brought back. But, that’s a different post altogether.
It’s no secret the fate of the automotive industry directly influences the fate of our sport. Luckily, we have Subaru, who not only finances a good portion of our sport domestically, but also provides the vehicles in which many competitors use at every event – including our reigning champion. Subaru has maintained a steady output of sales, despite the recession. Numbers could be better for the Japanese manufacturer, but they could be a lot worse. They were actually up one percent last month.
Subaru has done a great job maintaining their growth this year. An ever-growing fanbase has created an environment where the automaker stays in demand. And as rally grows, so does Subaru, from the ground up.
If these were better times, I’m sure the gains would have been higher than one percent. But for what it’s worth, our biggest contributor and supporter is somewhat healthy, and that’s comforting.
